Decorate A Master Bedroom With A Gray Color Palette

Gray doesn't always mean drab.

Gray doesn't have to mean a bedroom with crumbling, mildewed walls, a drab carpet, ancient bed sheets and an abundance of cobwebs. A gray color palette can, in fact, produce a beautiful master bedroom. Being a neutral color, gray produces almost any effect when you make a careful choice of shades, textures and accessories. Possibilities range from a bold charcoal bedroom with bright red accents, through a variety of clean modern looks, to a bright, airy room with delicate fabrics.

Instructions

1. Remove all the furniture from the room prior to painting the walls. Protect flooring with old sheets or newspapers if you don't plan to replace it.

2. Observe the room at intervals over a day, preferably an overcast day, to judge how much natural light it really gets. This helps you to select an appropriate paint color. One potential problem with certain shades of gray is a room looking stark on cloudy days.

3. Purchase a suitable paint for the walls. Pale dove grays are light and neutral, producing a bright room. Soft grays with a touch of pink add a warm feel. Deep shades of silver or charcoal look stunning, but can make a room look smaller.

4. Use a different shade of gray for the flooring or for an area rug. Normally, a deeper gray works well for wall-to-wall flooring. A boldly patterned rug in shades of gray, black and white is striking.

5. Select complementary colors for the main furnishings in the room, including dressers, nightstands and most of the bedding. Colors that complement gray walls include other shades of gray, white, cream and soft browns. Light pinks or blues also work if you want a feminine look. Vary textures. Wood furniture, lace or velvet curtains and fake fur throws help to avoid monotony.

6. Choose a contrasting color for smaller accessories, such as lamps, cushions and ornaments. The vivid splash of color stands out and brightens a neutral bedroom without overwhelming it. Almost any color goes with gray. For maximum contrast, try red or orange. For a subtler note, choose a cool color such as green, blue or purple.
