Ideas For Raised Panels In A Dining Room

Raised panels are reminiscent of a bygone era when craftsmen took time to create fine details in homes. With the kits available as of 2011, you do not have to be a woodworker to add elegant wood design touches to your home. A dining room is a good place to start.

Wainscoting

Most anyone with basic tools, a measuring tape, and the ability to follow written instructions, can install prefabricated raised panel wainscoting. Finishes available in ready-to-install kits include cherry, oak and maple. Along with stained wainscot, unfinished pieces are available that can be painted to match your decor. For a finished look, install a chair rail molding above the wainscot, in either the same stain or a complementary color.

Accent Wall

Covering an accent wall with raised panels can add a dramatic touch to your dining room. Much like wainscoting, you can stain or paint the wood to match your decor. For example, stain it in the same tones as your table and buffet. Or, paint it the same color as your walls and allow the texture to stand out. You could also paint it an accent color, such as one found in china displayed in a hutch in the room.

Furniture

Replacing existing cabinet doors in your dining room furniture is a way to bring raised panels into the space. Custom options include having a woodworker add new paneled doors to your furniture and matching the finish to the existing furniture, and using molding and panels to create a raised panel look on existing doors. Staining doors to match will create a polished look and make it seems as if they have always been part of the piece. Painting doors a slightly different hue will give the design more of a pop in the room. Reusing an old panel door to create a custom dining room table or buffet table offers the chance of having a functional conversation piece in the space.

Entry doors

Changing out interior doors with refurbished vintage raised panel doors, or adding molding and trim to existing doors to mimic the look of raised panels, can tie the room to other areas of the home where panels are used.
