Build Bedroom Shelves

Shelves in the bedroom can give you a place to display your books and trinkets

Bedrooms are notorious for needing storage and organization. Bedroom storage is usually limited to just one closet, which, most of the time, is just not enough room for all the things you need to store. Shelves can be extremely helpful in this regard. If you are thinking about adding shelves to your bedroom, it's possible to build them instead of buying them. Building shelves can add a personal touch to your room in a practical manner.

Instructions

1. Place the piece of 36 by 11 1/2-inch plywood on a flat surface so that the edge of the 36-inch side is resting on the building area. Place the two pieces of 5 foot by 11 1/2 inch plywood against the 36-inch board, one at each end. These pieces are the top and sides of the book shelf. Screw these pieces together by driving three screws through the 36-inch board into the edges of the 5-foot side boards.

2. Measure 2 inches from the bottom edge of the side pieces toward the center. Place one of the pieces of 34 1/2 by 11 1/2-inch plywood in between the two side pieces at this mark so that the edge of the 34 1/2-inch side is on the surface. This is the bottom shelf of the unit. Screw this piece into the sides by driving three screws through either side into the edges of the bottom shelf. You will now have a rectangular frame.

3. Place the pieces of 4 1/2 by 58 3/4-inch plywood overtop of the frame so they completely cover the opening. The pieces should be pushed together and be even with the top and bottom of the shelving unit. Screw these pieces into the shelving unit by driving two screws through the top and bottom of each piece into the edges of the top and bottom.

4. Stand the shelf unit up. Measure up 10 inches from the top of the bottom shelf and make a mark. Place a piece of 34 1/2 by 11 1/2-inch plywood so the bottom of this plywood shelf is at that mark. Screw this shelf in by placing two screws through each side and driving them into the edges of the shelf.

5. Repeat this process for the remaining three shelves, leaving 10 inches in between the bottom three shelves and 12 inches for the top two shelves. Attach these pieces to the bookshelf unit by driving screws through the sides and into the edges of the shelves.
