Window Treatments For Modern Bedrooms

Natural wood shutters are a trendy window treatment for a modern bedroom.

Bedroom windows call for privacy as well as decorative style. The 2010 trends, according to Smith & Noble merchandising manager Kara Roberts, are cleaner lines, less frill and more tailored, urban looks. (See References 1) Add color with tailored fabric toppers, cornices or valances and look toward neutral, natural treatments for bedroom windows.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds or shades are available in many different styles, fabrics and textures. The flat panel folds are tailored and linear---just right for today's look. Available in a palette of colors, Roman blinds can be selected in sheer, semi-opaque or room darkening styles. The blinds are easily layered with a valance, drapery or panels. (See References 2)

Natural Woven Wooden Shades

Bamboo and reed woven shades have, in the past, been seen on porches or in sun rooms, but recently they've come indoors to more formal settings. With their neat, clean appearance and excellent sun-blocking and privacy qualities, they combine a trendy look with function. A grass mat-style window treatment offers a tropical feel. Most woven shades can be painted to match or complement décor---or leave them natural and top with a colorful or print-type cornice or valance. (See References 3)

Shutters

Interior wood shutters are available in many styles. Plantation shutters are a good choice for the bedroom because they can be closed completely or tilted open at an angle during the evening for privacy. They can also be tilted wide open during the day for air and sunlight. Plantation shutters can also be tied at the top and bottom---to keep bottom shutters closed and the top open or vice versa.

Solid colonial panel shutters are another option. While they must be left open to allow in light and air, shutters can be backed with sheers for more privacy. Traditional shutters can be installed as an accent upon window frames. All wooden shutters can be painted or stained to match or complement your room décor. To make your room appear larger, paint your walls a light neutral color and paint your window shutter the same color. (See References 4)

Wooden Venetian Blinds

Wooden slats are the new twist on the old metal Venetian blinds. They are available in different finishes, from wood stains to painted or pickled finishes for a clean, chic look. They can be opened and closed with a chord and their fabric tapes come in a wide variety of colors to match your décor. (See References 5)
