Paint A Small Bedroom

Paint a Small Bedroom

Painting can be an easy and inexpensive way to freshen up a space. When choosing paint colors, be sure to take into account the size of the space as well as the amount of natural light. A larger space or a space with a lot of windows can handle a darker or richer color without being overwhelming. In a small bedroom space, it is best to stick to lighter colors. If a darker color is a must, consider painting just one wall in the darker color as an accent wall.

Instructions

1. Prepare the room. Remove all artwork from the walls including any nails. Remove all hardware from light plates, electrical outlets and window coverings. Move the furniture to the center of the room and drape with drop cloths or old sheets. If the room is too small to do this, furniture may need to be removed. Put a drop cloth or plastic over the floor. This can be taped to the floorboard to avoid movement and paint seeping through to the floor.

2. Prepare the walls. If the walls are dirty, consider washing the walls before painting. This will ensure a smoother application of paint. Apply filler to any nail holes, allow to dry and sand to produce a finish even with the surrounding wall. If the current wall color is darker than the new paint color, prime the walls first to prevent bleed through or multiple coats of the new paint.

3. Tape the woodwork. Using painter's tape, tape off all woodwork that will not be painted. This includes baseboards, crown molding and wood around doors and windows. Take your time with this step and be sure that woodwork is covered well to avoid having to touch up the woodwork after painting is complete.

4. Paint the room. Cut in around the borders of the room and in corners with a small brush or a cut-in roller. Using a large roller, paint the walls by drawing the letter "M" repeatedly. This will avoid paint lines and streaks in the paint that often occur if up and down strokes are used. After the first coat has been applied, allow the paint to dry. Inspect the walls to determine if a second coat should be applied. Apply the second coat, if needed, in the same way as the first.

5. Pour leftover paint in small glass jars and label it with the paint name, manufacturer, date and the room where it was used. This will make touch-ups at a later date easier to accomplish.
