Decorate A Pirate Bedroom With Waves & Blue Skies

Decorate a pirate-themed bedroom with blue skies, waves and other pirate-related elements.

Decorate your little pirate's bedroom with waves and blue skies to facilitate his imaginary sea adventures. A themed bedroom can encourage your child's imaginative play and give him a space that he feels is genuinely his. Your child's bedroom should include elements of a pirate's life that most appeal to him. Use the entire bedroom to complete the theme instead of relying on the walls.

Instructions

1. Prepare for painting by removing everything from the walls and washing them down. If the walls are not white, you may want to use primer first so the old paint colors don't bleed through your new design. Tape off windows, trim and doors with blue painter's tape. Cover the floor and any furniture with a plastic or cloth tarp that won't allow any spilled paint to seep through.

2. Paint at least one wall to look like the sea and sky. If you paint all of the walls, the room can serve as an island or your little pirate's ship. Use a darker blue paint for the sea and a lighter blue for the sky. If you want a more natural appearance, consider lightly mixing a small amount of white paint in with the blue (don't blend the two colors together) and painting streaks across the "water."

3. Create waves by drawing the design on the wall lightly with a pencil or using a stencil about one-third of the way up the wall. Paint the portion of wall under the waves in the darker blue color or mix. Use a smaller paint brush to outline the wave-line and fill it in. Paint the wall above the wave-line with the lighter blue color or mix. The ceiling can continue the "sky" if you're painting the entire room.

4. Accentuate the waves by drawing darker blue wave-lines in random spots in the "water." Sponging a darker blue randomly throughout the water may create a more realistic-looking ocean, as well. Dip a sponge in white paint and dab it under the waves to create the illusion of sea foam or bubbles.

5. Add clouds to the skies by dipping sea sponges lightly in white paint and dabbing it onto the wall to create a cloud shape. Dip the same sponge in the blue sky-colored paint and go over the outer-edges of the cloud to blend it in a bit, making it appear more natural.

6. Arrange the furniture to look like a captain's quarters and allow plenty of space for play. Invest in a pirate-themed bed, or create a bed that mimics a pirate's ship if possible. The dresser and shelves should be natural-looking wood like you'd find on a pirate ship. Use a chest that looks like a treasure chest as a toy box.

7. Accessorize the room with pirate-themed items. Look for a ship's wheel wall clock, Jolly Roger flag comforter, treasure map curtains, model ships, a globe, a compass and more to decorate the room and add to the pirate-theme. Consider planting a small fake palm tree in one corner of the room for a stuffed parrot to sit in, or hang a large fishnet in one corner to hold stuffed animals. A blue rug in the center of the room can give the illusion of more water.
