Make A Vintageinspired Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a place of respite from the stresses of the everyday world. No matter the age or style of your home, you can make your bedroom look like a vintage paradise. With the addition of repurposed furniture, carefully chosen linens and textiles, a soft color palette, elegant lighting and vintage-inspired accessories, your room will have a lived-in look reminiscent of eras past.

Instructions

1. Paint your room in a soft color, such a creamy white, a pastel pink, a light peach or a smooth dove gray. If using just one color on the wall isn't your style, add an accent wall in another soft color or hang wallpaper to add texture. By bathing your room in a soft glow of color, the mood of your room will instantly be transformed into one of peace and tranquility evocative of an earlier era.

2. Choose a vintage-inspired bed. A large iron or brass bed serves this purpose well and can often be found at a thrift store or garage sale for a reasonable cost. If the metal bed frame is in poor condition, refinish it with sandpaper and a can of metal-finish spray paint to give it an updated but still worn look. If a metal bed isn't your style, a wooden bed frame and headboard painted in white and distressed to look aged adds vintage style to your room.

3. Place distressed furniture pieces, such as dressers, side tables and armoires, around your room to give it an authentic look of the era you are trying to create. If the furniture needs distressing, use sandpaper to remove paint from the corners and edges where it would naturally come off with time. Use painted pieces of furniture in light colors such as yellow, white, pink, blue and green to maintain the soft look in the space. Consider placing a velvet armchair in a corner to give your space a seating area.

4. Hang vintage curtains on your windows and drape tablecloths over the surfaces of your dressers and tables to soften all the hard edges in the room and make the space more inviting and welcoming. Look for curtains and tablecloths made of old lace or that have ruffles, ribbon edging or crocheted trim. Choose a comforter in soft, cozy cotton.

5. Place vintage table lamps around the room on a dresser, armoire and small tables for diffused lighting or hang a chandelier in the center of the room.
