Decorate A Teen Bedroom Cheap

Decorate a teen's room to reflect his own style; without bankrupting you.

Teens usually have their own ideas of how they want their bedrooms decorated. These ideas typically clash with their parents' thoughts and change frequently. Makeover your teenager's room in a way that appeals to both of you without having to tap into the college fund. If you work together and get creative, it can turn out to be a fun project and you'll both be satisfied with the results.

Instructions

1. Determine a theme or color scheme based on your teen's interests and personality. If his favorite color changes weekly, stick with a neutral color palette that can be updated easily with colorful accessories. If he's had the same favorite color since he was 2, it's probably safe to use that as a mainstay in his bedroom decor.

2. Paint the walls. This is the easiest, least-expensive way to dramatically change or update a room. The color should be her choice, within reason. For example, if she wants lime green walls, suggest that one wall be used as an accent wall and allow her to paint that wall green. If any colors are off-limits no matter what, tell her that from the beginning. Paint and home improvement stores have hundreds of swatches, so take a trip together and look at what's available.

3. Recycle his old bedroom furniture, pieces from around the house or pick up items from second-hand stores, flea markets or yard sales. Furniture can be reupholstered, painted or stained to fit his theme or color scheme.

4. Purchase a quality comforter in a neutral color. Reversible comforters are great for teens as they offer two options right away. New covers can be purchased, or even made, relatively inexpensively.

5. Frame posters or pictures to hang on the walls. Posters and pictures can easily be swapped out for new ones when her tastes change and she gets tired of the old ones. If she's artistic, consider framing some of her own pictures, provided that they work with the theme and/or color scheme. Paint old frames to match the new decor, if you have them.

6. Infuse the room with colorful and themed accessories. For example, if he wants a sports-themed room, frame his prized football jersey, hang his old hockey sticks or line a shelf with his trophies and medals. Place a pillow or throw on his blanket that displays his favorite team's logo. If he's into cars, display his model cars or large replicas of different car emblems.
