Decorate A Guest Bedroom

Comfortable Guest Bedroom

While you and your family may not spend much time in your guest bedrooms, a thoughtfully decorated guest room is something your overnight guests are sure to enjoy. Select furniture, linens and wall colors to compliment the style of your room's decor and remember to add special treats to make your guests feel welcome. Fresh flowers, a spa basket or a container of decadent chocolates compliment any style of bedroom decor. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you start planning your guest room's look, as well as three decorating themes you can use to create a comfortable and stylish space for your guests to enjoy.

Instructions

1. Choose a theme. Whether you want a charming and simple combination, or you want to go big and extravagant, having a clear idea of the look you're going for is a must before you try to create it.

2. The simplest change you can make that can change the whole feel of the room is to paint the walls. Choose a color that goes along with the your theme and that accents, but doesn't overpower, the rest of your decor.

3. Make use of your wall space. Whether it's hanging artwork, photographs, or mirrors, be sure not to leave your walls bare.

4. Consider all aspects: furniture, linens, curtains, and lighting. Furniture placement can make all the difference if you're looking for an open space or a smaller, cozier feel. A duvet cover and new sheets arranged in a different way on the bed can change the whole look of the room. Lighting plays a big part as well, so be sure to choose curtains and lamps/light fixtures that provide just the amount of light you want in the room.

5. You can turn your guest bedroom into a retreat with peaceful mocha, soothing blue or calming green walls. Luxurious linens in solid colors and natural fabrics paired with simple window treatments like silk drapes or bamboo blinds will contribute to the Zen-like decor. Add a seating area for one or two with a table top fountain for atmosphere. Black and white photos of architectural details from around your town or nature scenes like trees surrounded by morning mists will work for your walls. Place a basket on the dresser filled with spa-inspired lotions and other personal care items for your guests to enjoy.

6. For a vintage style guest bedroom, add shabby chic furniture, cabbage rose or calico print fabrics and an overstuffed chair or two for your guest's comfort. Paint the walls a deep blue, soft yellow or rich red as a backdrop for the eclectic collection of knick knacks, photos, books and candles that decorate the room and contribute to the homey atmosphere. Add a vanity table if there's room, with a wrought iron mirror.

7. If you're going for an simple and elegant looks, place a four poster bed, with or without a canopy, a highboy style wardrobe and a dresser made with rich mahogany or cherry wood. Taupe, soft yellow or light green walls contrast beautifully with the deep tones of the mahogany or cherry wood. Add sumptuous white cotton linens for the bedding and flowing white sheers on the canopy and the windows to provide more contrast with the wood's richness. Decorate the walls with silk tapestries or botanical art matted and framed with wooden frames. Place a bench for seating at the end of the bed, or create a seating area next to a window with tall wing back chairs and a table.
