Decorate A Teen Boy'S Bedroom

Decorate your teen boy's room with a simple style he can enjoy and thrive in.

Most teen boys don't like a lot of fuss over their bedroom decor. They just want a place where they can hang out with their friends, watch TV, play video games and escape from the rest of the world. Decorating your teen's room with colors or a theme that speaks to him may help him feel more comfortable in his room, and possibly even encourage him to keep it tidy. Include your teen in the design process, so you don't put together a room he can't stand being in.

Instructions

1. Paint the room in your son's favorite color, or a color that corresponds with the theme of the room, such as his favorite team's colors. Use a light, neutral earth tone, such as tan or green, for a more mature, grown-up room.

2. Choose furniture than serves dual purposes and is made well, particularly if he'll be taking his furniture with him when it's time to move out. A loft bunk bed with a futon or desk area on bottom can free up much-needed floor space, and give him a place to study or hang out with his friends. A chest of drawers made to double as a media center stores his underclothes and video games so they aren't all over his bedroom. Include seating for his friends if they visit often.

3. Hang framed artwork, posters or pictures on the walls that complement the room's decor. Frame posters of his favorite athletes for a sports theme, jets for a military theme or his favorite video games for a gamer theme. Put up a magnetized white board to give him a place to keep track of his appointments, significant school dates and household duties. Hang his awards and plaques, if applicable.

4. Include storage solutions in the design and layout of the room. The storage containers should be within arm's reach of where the items are used or needed. Hang floating shelves or situate bookshelves near his study area to store schoolwork, books and school supplies. Shelves or decorative boxes can hold games, DVDs, CDs, headphones and other entertainment accessories.

5. Accessorize the room with items that add to the decor, function and bring him comfort. Display his trophies, collectible video game figures, sports memorabilia or pictures of him and his friends on his nightstand, dresser or shelves. Hang a laundry hamper that looks like a basketball hoop to make it fun for him to pick up his dirty socks off the floor.
