Decorate A Floating Shelf In A Dining Room

Use floating shelves to add interest and additional decorating options to your dining room.

Floating shelves add decoration to any room, while also providing a space to display decorative accessories or put delicate items up and away. Shelves can line one wall, mirror each other on opposite walls or create an intricate design, depending on your preference. Incorporate the shelves into your decor by using shelves that are the same color as the wall or other furniture in the room. For example, if your dining table is a rich mahogany color, use floating shelves of the same color.

Instructions

1. Group objects together by their likeness. For example, if you want to display a variety of different collections, use one shelf for decorative plates, another for vases and a third for glassware. The items can be grouped by the type of item, color, texture or size. Placing items into groups of odd numbers, such as three, five or seven, generally adds interest.

2. Place the items on the shelves. For example, arrange pictures or artwork on the shelves so that they lean against the wall. Smaller items can sit in front of the pictures, such as small bud vases or candles.

3. Include interesting items that add color and interest to the room and complement the rest of the decor. For example, if your table is set with black linens and white dishes, fill glass jars with black, white and red marbles or use a black vase with red flowers. Books, plates, vases, fish bowls, figurines, pictures or anything you want to use can sit on the shelves and add to your dining room decor, as long as it fits in with the formality and style of the room.
