Handmade Wood Dining Room Chairs

Basic dining room chairs made from wood can add a classic style to your home while lending themselves to fun or sophistication, depending on how you finish them. While wood dining chairs can be purchased at most furniture stores, you can create your own at home with just basic woodworking skills. Once your wood pieces are cut, you should be able to make a chair in one to two hours, with a full set taking only a day.

Instructions

1. Create a square shape on the ground with the 10-inch boards and the 12-inch boards. Make sure the boards rest on their 1-inch widths with the 12-inch boards capping the cut ends of the 10-inch boards. Secure each corner with two 2-inch screws.

2. Center the 1-foot-square board over the square frame and align the edges. Insert a 3-inch screw through the square seat board and into the frame every 3 inches down two opposite sides.

3. Turn the unit onto one side with the two screwed sides running upright. Lay the two 20-inch boards on the ground and bring one end of each board up to the inside of the square frame so it butts against the underside of the square seat. Screw two 2-inch screws through each board and into the frame to connect the front legs of the chair.

4. Lay the two 40-inch boards vertically on a flat surface, running parallel and spaced 6 inches apart. Place the 12-by-16 inch back panel board over the two boards, with the 16-inch sides running vertically. Align the back board to the top edges of the long boards. Insert 3-inch screws through the back panel and into the boards underneath every 3 inches.

5. Rotate the seat unit so the front legs of the chair are sticking up in the air and the side of the frame opposite the legs is face-down. Set the chair seat on top of the back unit. Space the seat to rest 2 inches below the bottom of the chair's back. Use 2-inch screws through the frame and screwed into the 40-inch boards.

6. Stand the chair upright. Hold a 10-inch brace board horizontally against the inside surface of one back leg and one front leg 6 inches above the ground. Secure the brace to the legs with two 2-inch screws at each end. Place the remaining brace against the other side and secure it in place. Sand over the entire chair to smooth the wood.
