Decorating Old Bathrooms With Original Color Tiles

Even if tile is in a color you dislike, you can transform the space.

Remodeling a bathroom to replace a tile color you dislike is a costly project; therefore it is more economical to decorate with the existing tile color. Although this may seem a daunting task, diminishing the effect of the distasteful color is not difficult if you incorporate accent colors to downplay the look. Another option is to work with the tile by adding warm or cool colored decor that makes it more aesthetically pleasing.

Bathroom Theme

Some people enjoy a romantic, serene atmosphere. Other choices are a tropical, Southwestern, country or Victorian style. You may desire a contemporary or old-fashioned ambiance. Shop at bed and bath, department and discount stores to find a shower curtain that has a touch of the tile color in it as well as the type of theme you desire. If the bathroom only has a shower stall, focus your attention on finding wall art with the tile color somewhere in it and in the theme you prefer.

Accent Colors

Focus your attention on utilizing the accent colors in the shower curtain or wall art in the room. In many bathrooms, the shower curtain is the main feature in the room and sets the tone of the space. This diminishes the effect the tile has in the bathroom. For instance, if your bathroom tile is pink and you select a Victorian looking shower curtain that has touches of pink, sea foam green and white, paint the wall the green or white shade. Another idea is to use a wallpaper that has these colors in the majority of the pattern. Select rugs, curtains, a wastebasket and counter top organizers in these shades as well. This focuses the person's attention on the accent colors rather than the tile color.

Warm Bathroom Colors

Make the most of the existing tile color by incorporating it in your theme. This gives the space unity. For instance, if your tile is a golden yellow, use a Southwestern print shower curtain or wall art. Utilize a brushed gold tone in your light fixtures, faucets, picture frames and other decor trimmed in the gold. Another option is to choose colors that mimic a sunset to enhance the warm, earth tones in the tile.

Cool Bathroom Colors

If the tile is white, choose peaceful blues, a pale or medium violet or green shades to add a cool ambiance to the bathroom. If the tile is a garish shade of blue, utilize white or green in your decor choices. The cool colors add a relaxing, clean feel to the space. Choose silver-toned faucets, light fixtures or picture frames to enhance the cool colors. This is a wise way to work with the cool color of the tiles, instead of attempting to diminish the appearance.
