Decorate A Tween Bedroom

Decorate a Tween Bedroom

Decorating a room that belongs to a tween or pre-teen room should centralize around ideas and themes that will be relevant for several years to come. As the tween will likely live in this room through high school and possibly through college, the major changes such as paint and furniture should be something she will be able to live with and enjoy for years to come.

Instructions

Decorating Ideas for Your Tween

1. Sit down with your tween child to discuss decorating ideas together. As she is nearing the years of young adulthood, she will likely have strong opinions and ideas for what the room should look like. Since she will be the one living in the room, stay open to the ideas that may not be what you would have chosen for her, as long as they are age-appropriate.

2. Begin with the color scheme of the room. Because of the changing of fads, trends, and interests that are sure to occur over the next several years of her life, focus on a color scheme as opposed to a room theme such as pop culture icons, movies or music. These will likely change. Consider choosing one wall for a pop color, which is a coordinating shade, or darker shade, in relation to the rest of the room.

3. Change or rearrange furniture. Depending on the size and layout of the room, create designated areas such as a workspace for homework and a friend area. In the workspace, add shelves for supplies and paperwork and a desk. If space allows, add a chair or two or a small couch or love seat for a friend area.

4. Add accents in relations to her interests. If she is a dancer, create a display for her trophies and old dance shoes. For a music enthusiast, consider making a border on the walls with old or blank CD's. Attach them with paint-friendly mounting tape. Any pop culture interests can be displayed with posters since these can be easily changed.

5. Use decorative pillows, lamps, and new bedding to spruce up the space. A few well-placed accents can give an entirely new feel to the room. Consider painting an old dresser or bookcase to bring the furniture back to life.
