Decorate A Master Bedroom With An Upholstered Headboard

The style of your upholstered headboard sets the tone for your bedroom decor. Tufted headboards are reminiscent of Hollywood glamor, while brown leather headboards outlined with metal studs are contemporary. Upholstered headboards that are shirred fit well with a traditional décor, and lush padded headboards can be modern or French country, depending on the fabric.

Instructions

1. If your bed has a tufted headboard, decorate your master bedroom in a combination of glamorous and shabby chic styles. Hang a chandelier dripping with crystals over the bed or sitting area, place luxurious faux fur throw rugs on the floor and decorate the windows with opulent floor-to-ceiling drapes made of silk. Coordinate the drapes and the bed linens with the fabric on the tufted upholstered headboard. For example, if your headboard is white, bring in color with the linens and drapes. You can go dramatic with black, red or cobalt, or keep the decor subtle with shades of yellow, green or peach. Venetian cut glass mirrors on the walls are a must; complement them with mirror tiled bedside tables. Tie in the sitting area with the headboard by decorating with upholstered chairs that also have tufted backs.

2. If your bed has a leather upholstered headboard, decorate your master bedroom in a clean, contemporary style. Select bedside tables made of hardwood that complement the lines of the headboard. Install hardwood flooring that either complements or contrasts with the other furniture. It's acceptable to mix light and dark woods, especially in a contemporary room. Relaxed Roman shades will bring softness to the room while maintaining a contemporary feel. Select fabrics for the bed linens and the shades that complement the leather headboard while adding color to your room. If the leather is brown or black, brighten the room with shades of red, cream or light blue fabrics. White or cream leather headboards stand out against deep, rich colored fabrics.

3. If your upholstered headboard has shirring or thick padding, decorate your bedroom in a traditional or French country style. The shirring around the headboard may be straight, gathered or pleated. If the shirring is ruffled, country or French country is the way to go. The fabric on the headboard will also guide you in your room décor; floral, plaid or other fussy patterned fabrics will fit traditional or French country, while solid colors lean toward a traditional design. Hang straight-line drapes and shades in a traditional bedroom. Fuller, billowing drapes are better for a French country decor. Hardwood floors work for both styles. Use wood bedside table and wing-back chairs as furniture in a traditional room. Use painted furniture and overstuffed chairs in a French country room.
