Flooring Ideas For A Kitchen And Dining Area

Bamboo is a sustainable resource that makes excellent kitchen flooring.

Don't get stuck with dull linoleum when you redo your kitchen and dining area. There are several other options that can add a warm, inviting look to these rooms while keeping them easy to clean. Having a single, continuous flooring type between the kitchen and dining room can make your home appear larger, plus it reduces the risk of tripping over a flooring transition as you carry items from one room to the other.

Hardwood

Maple, oak and other hardwoods help give your home a classic yet timeless style. Natural wood adds warmth to the feel and look of your home, and true hardwood (not laminate) can be refinished so it holds up for decades or even centuries. Make sure your hardwood is properly sealed and maintained, and it will withstand the occasional splatters and spills of kitchen use. Choose a stain color that is lighter than your dining room furniture if you have dark wood there, or choose a mahogany or cinnamon shade to set off light-colored furniture in the kitchen and dining area. Hardwood floors will work with nearly any paint color, so they won't limit your decor options for the kitchen and dining room the way colored carpet and vinyl might.

Bamboo

Bamboo flooring offers a similar look to hardwood flooring but with many benefits. The bamboo is highly renewable due to its fast-growing nature and minimal space needs, so the flooring is eco-friendly. The surface of quality bamboo flooring is highly durable and spill-resistant, and the flooring comes in a few color and pattern options. To keep your dining room feeling warm and inviting, add a room-size area rug beneath the dining room table. This will help keep sounds softer and less prone to the echoes you get from hard surfaces, but the bamboo underneath will maintain continuity and, unlike wall-to-wall carpeting, you can remove the rug for cleaning as necessary.

Granite

Granite tiles offer one of the most durable surfaces you can have in your kitchen and, with the popularity of granite countertops in modern kitchens, granite tile is a solid flooring choice. It is resistant to nearly any kind of spill and will hold up well under heavy foot traffic. Even hot oil or highly acidic foods won't damage the tile if cleaned up shortly after the spill occurs. In the dining room, granite adds a look of class that can enhance your formal dinners, yet is practical for everyday dining because it will hold up to moving chair legs and dropped dishes. To avoid echo issues with a hard granite floor, use plenty of soft fabrics in your decor, such as floor-length draperies and scatter rugs or upholstered furniture.
