Customize Upholstered Dining Chairs

Customize upholstered dining chairs to suit your space.

Fabric upholstered dining chairs can add style and comfort to a dining room, whether the space is casual or formal. Upholstering furniture is also an easy way to best coordinate your furnishings to the room's decor, or make an outdated piece of furniture look brand new. If you already have upholstered chairs and you are looking for a way to customize them for the space, add a few personalized touches.

Instructions

1. Attach decorative ribbon or piping around the seam of the chair. This can be attached by hand with needle and thread or more simply with a bead of hot glue. Simply line the area you want to cover with hot glue and carefully press the trim in place. Use a contrasting color to add interest to the look of the chair.

2. Tie a bow around the base of the chair back. This is an easy customization trick that you can change to coordinate with the season. For example, use raffia material or floral garlands in the spring. In the winter use white, silver, gold, red or green cloth instead.

3. Give an upholstered chair a tufted effect by adding buttons. For this option, drill holes in the back of the chair where you want the tufting. Thread buttons with fabric and pull from the front to the back of the chair. Tie in place tautly on the back. This will create tufted indentations in the front of the chair. Cover the back of the chair with more fabric or self-adhesive wood veneer.

4. Paint or embroider a monogram onto the chair. This will give your dining room chair a very customized look. Make a stencil with your chosen monogram, then paint directly to the chair frame or fabric. Embroidering is a more time-consuming project, but this can be added to the fabric before it is upholstered. Embroidered monograms are now available in stick-on or iron-on products at the craft store as well.

5. Wrap the legs, arms and exposed frame of the chair with decorative cording. Choose cording that will complement the look of the chair. In a rustic, country kitchen, wrap the frame in jute twine and hot glue the material in place.

6. Accent the chair with throw pillows and cushions. If you want a simple and low budget fix to give the chair a more personal look, a simple cushion or pillow can do the trick. You can either make these pillows yourself or purchase them from a store. For something unique, look in flea markets or antique shops for interesting decorative choices.
