Have A Bohemian Style Bedroom

Sew your own throw pillows in bold contrasting colors and add tassles, fringe or ribbon.

Bohemian bedrooms are cozy and inviting. The multitude of colors, fabrics and comfort items creates a nest-like environment. Strong colors, plush fabrics and diverse patterns combine to make a cohesive and eclectic place to hang out. Freestyle decorating allows you to mix furniture and accessories from several different eras. Use the items you like the most when planning your bohemian room. Tie all the pieces together with a cohesive color scheme of rich, bold colors. Thrift store furniture and lamps can be spray painted gold or black to make a basic backdrop for the materials.

Instructions

1. Paint your walls a deep, rich color. Bold colors like red, orange, deep blue or purple can be applied to all the walls, or you can choose an accent wall. If you decide on an accent wall, paint the remaining walls gold or off-white.

2. Mix a variety of furniture styles. Gather items that you already own or go to the thrift shop to look for side tables, comfy chairs in unexpected colors, a vintage headboard and bookcases.

3. Fill the room with a variety of textured materials. Choose curtains, bedspreads, throw rugs and blankets in rich, bold colors. High contrast is expected in a bohemian style bedroom. Layer throw pillows, floor pillows and blankets in soft, silky or furry fabrics throughout the room.

4. Cluster multiple accessories around the room. Bold art pieces, sculptures and vases full of flowers--real or silk--give the room a cozy feel. Gather or purchase odd items from thrift shops or import stores. Add your favorite old stuffed animals and hang posters of your favorite bands. Records can be hung as artwork.

5. Use soft lighting. Use low-watt or colored bulbs in your floor lamps or table lamps. Drape beads around ceiling fixtures so they hang down. Party stores sell inexpensive beads in a variety of colors. Ribbons can be ties around lamps to embellish them.
