Ideas For Decorating A Red Dining Room

Red in the dining room adds romance.

For ages, red has enjoyed the status as the color of choice for dining rooms, which is due to the fact that in the glow of the evening light, the reflection gives a complimentary pink hue to the faces of everyone present. Red also enjoys the status of having a reputation for keeping the conversation from waning due to the psychological excitement that it stimulates compared to other colors. Consider other ways to keep conversation flowing while looking pretty without painting everything raging red.

Chandelier and Shades

Few things are more important to the inviting ambiance required by a formal dining room than the lighting. Allow the lighting in a dining room to set the tone for the rest of the room. Select a ceiling-mounted fixture with at least six bulb spots. Select shades which range from pink to burgundy on the inside. When the electricity is on, this will generate a fair amount of color reflection into the room. Use only frosted flame-tipped chandelier bulbs. Grace the ceiling with a medallion for the chandelier to finish the look.

Walls

The walls serve as the largest reflective surface if they are not obscured by paintings, tall furniture or mirrors. Paint the walls in four-inch wide stripes. Choose color values which are neighbors on the color wheel. Begin with a lower saturation value as the base coat, and apply stripes in the deeper tone. Paint the ceiling in the faintest pink available at the paint store. Select a crown molding scaled to the height of the ceiling and the size of the room.

Table, Chairs and Carpet

The table and chairs in the red dining room need to provide visual breathing room without inhibiting the flow of color and mood. A custom-made glass top table placed over a gorgeous French carpet is the perfect solution. Coordinate the high quality upholstery fabric for the chairs with the carpet. Line the walls with the chairs when the dining room is not in use to highlight the carpet.

Windows

If there is any room in the house where privacy is not an issue, it is the dining room. If the room will become cluttered visually with a set of drapes or other window treatment, select a lovely design for a cornice board. Upholster the cornice board in the same fabric used for the dining room chairs. The cornice board will suffice as the sole window dressing if all else is executed with excellence.
