Paint An Attic Bedroom

An attic can be made into a comfortable bedroom with the help of a little paint.

Expanding families sometimes have to find creative ways to deal with finding space in a small home. Sometimes this means finding a larger house to live in. However, a less-expensive approach is to try to make the most of the space you already have. For this reason, many people choose to create attic bedrooms. While it's a good place to put your oldest who no longer wants to share a room, an attic can seem a bit cramped and dark as a bedroom unless you take steps to liven things up. An excellent way to do this is through the use of paint. Of course, you must have first installed wall board over any open surfaces so you have something to paint on.

Instructions

1. Clear out everything in the attic before you start painting. This will protect the items, and make it easier to get to the walls. This latter point is important, since attics can be cramped spaces, with walls that lean in sharply, meaning you may need to work at odd angles.

2. Choose a paint for your attic space. Since attics are often have few or very small windows, they can be fairly dark and gloomy. Try to make the space seem bright and airy by using a white or very light paint color.

3. Use a small brush to apply a bit of the paint to a small area of your attic walls and let it dry. Wait until late in the day and examine to paint to make sure it is right, since colors often appear darker when they dry than when wet and freshly mixed. And the last thing you want is to make the attic seem even darker.

4. Wait until a dry day to paint. Place plastic drop clothes on the floor to protect it. Wear protective clothing and eye protection. Paint the room, starting with the ceiling first and working your way down. Open the attic windows to speed the drying process. If the attic has a ventilation fan, as many attics do, use this to help push air through.
