Dining Room Table Decoration Ideas

Dining Room Table Decoration Ideas

Elaborate, formal dinners at the dining room table are not a reality for most families the way such dinners once were. Families eat in more relaxed and casual places in the home, leaving the dining room table a blank canvas for decoration ideas. Because it is not in use the majority of the time, the dining room table is an inviting surface for decorative displays that lend new purpose to a little-used piece of furniture.

Antiques and Family Heirlooms

Seldom seen antiques and family heirlooms tucked away in dark corners of the basement or attic can enjoy new, high visibility when they are assigned a new home as the featured item in the dining room table decor. Nestled on top of an attractive table runner, a silver tea service or porcelain tea set will fill the room with charm and maybe even memories of family members if the items have been inherited.

Candle Display

Decorating the dining room table with candles is a traditional decorating technique that can be applied in countless ways. One idea, from the National Candle Association, is to use "large pillar candles placed in glass lanterns or surrounded by glass hurricanes" to "make a bold decorating statement during the day, and cloak a room with subtle warmth and drama when lit." Candles can be displayed in various sizes, shapes and colors and can even be changed to coincide with the colors of each holiday and season.

Photo Display

Using a photo display as a decoration for the dining room table is a great way to capitalize on the expansive flat surface the table has to offer. There is plenty of room for a large collection of photos and frames and enough space to plan the arrangement without a look of overcrowding.

Favorite Books

A stack of cherished books make an excellent addition to the center of the dining table, especially when the books are nestled in between an interesting pair of book ends. Old books have the most character and visual appeal, but even new hardcover books with the dust jackets removed can make an attractive display.

Floral Arrangement

While it might not be practical to keep a vase full of fresh flowers year-round, a floral arrangement made from silk or dried flowers is a traditional accessory for the dining table. Ideas for arranging these on the dining table include one large vase with a bouquet or several single vases with one or two flowers in each.
