Decorate A Dining Room With A Fireplace & A Sliding Glass Door

Learn decorate your dining room with a fireplace and a sliding door.

A dining room is an idyllic location that serves as the heart of your home, where your family gathers together to share conversation about the day. You want your dining room to exude warmth and comfort that serve as the backdrop for generations of memories. A fireplace lets you achieve this goal, but a fireplace and a sliding glass door in one room take up a lot of wall space that you could otherwise use to decorate the room. Use the advantages of your fireplace and sliding glass door to make these features a benefit to your room.

Instructions

1. Paint your dining room. Lighter colors will make the room appear larger. Letting light come through the sliding glass door will help balance out darker colors.

2. Paint your fireplace and mantel if you prefer. A crisp white color contrasts well with a darker paint color on the wall behind it.

3. Add molding around the sliding glass door if it doesn't currently have a frame. Paint the wood the same color as your fireplace mantel to connect the architecture.

4. Use wallpaper that is intended for glass to cover your sliding glass door. Several designs of window wallpaper are available from retailers. This treatment will help add privacy and décor to your otherwise blank sliding glass door. It will also make your dining room look more like it has four walls; the wall with the sliding glass door will become a focal wall.

5. Lay an area rug underneath the area where your dining table will go. This will help to define the area. Use a rug that coordinates with the color on the floors and walls.

6. Place a round, glass-top table on top of the rug. A round table will take up less space than a rectangular one, and the glass tabletop will makes the table seem like it doesn't take up too much space.

7. Place chairs around your table. Match your chairs to the rug below. As an alternative, use brightly colored chairs that stand out from the wall colors.

8. Hang a light fixture over the table. Allow at least 36 inches from the top of the table to the bottom of the light fixture. Use a chandelier for an elegant option or a series of three to five pendant lights.

9. Add accessories to the room. Place a small table against one of the walls that does not feature the door or fireplace. Avoid using bulky furnishings, such as a china cabinet, that will take up a large portion of your floor space. Set the table with a matching set of dinnerware. Place a table runner along the table. Group decorative accessories together, such as salt and pepper shakers and a coffee grinder on top of a wooden cutting board.
