Retro Bathroom Styles

Bring out colors with fresh flowers.

Bathrooms are typically one of the smallest rooms in the house and, as such, lend themselves to experimental decorating. You can redo the design if you aren't happy with the result without having to rip down tons of wallpaper or repaint a large space. If there is a particular genre of decor that appeals to you, use your bathroom to express that interest. Since a bathroom is a private place, your family and friends have time to appreciate your efforts.

Art Deco

Art Deco was an artistic design movement in the 1920s when form and function converged for sleek designs that had a futuristic feel, but were created out of heavy, classic materials like bronze and iron. Art Deco was famous for simple, geometric patterns. Create a tiered angular pattern with contrasting tiles in your shower or on your floors. Use black, cream, gold and teal, all telltale choices of the Art Deco genre. A thin gold accent line around any wainscoting adds a classic touch.

1970s

The 1970s were characterized by bright colors, tactile textures, and bold geometric designs. Paint the walls in a bright orange or yellow. Paint a pattern of dots or squares on the molding if you are artistically inclined or simply choose an accent color that complements your walls. A neutral cream or brown will work well if your wall color is particularly bright. Get a funky shag carpet and a wacky shower curtain that shimmers or has a texture, like a curtain made a packing bubbles material.

Edwardian or Victorian

These eras represent royal decadence and sumptuous luxury. Create a bathroom fit for a king with a clawfoot tub, if you have the budget. Choose wallpaper with a floral design and heavy-weight curtains in a dark color like deep burgundy or purple. You can use the colors in your wallpaper to find a shade for your curtains to achieve a harmonious look. Mount some vintage magazine ads or photographs in ornate-carved frames.

French Country

The French Country motif features bright, sunny colors like yellow, purple and blue, with a focus on natural materials and nature shapes. Paint your walls in a light yellow or use floral wallpaper. Stick to simple white or cream for moldings. Accessorize the bathroom with wicker baskets or a collection of dried wildflowers in a simple wooden frame. Natural materials like cotton or linen work best for this motif.
