Dining Room Decorating Ideas For Picture Paneling

Decorating a dining room containing picture paneling can be challenging but rewarding.

Picture paneling can be pretty but sometimes challenging to decorate. Whether purchasing new decorative items or using those that you may already have on hand, any that are appropriate for a dining room can be used with picture paneling; but you should take into consideration balance, proportion and scale when decorating within the "picture frame" molding it provides. When you do, you can create attractive wall displays that may serve as focal points or conversation starters that will enhance the dining experience.

Hang Framed Pictures Within the Frames

If there is a series of picture frame panels of equal size, hanging framed photos or art of equal size within each frame isn't necessary. You can balance a large photo or art piece with a group of smaller pieces in the next framed panel. When selecting a single large photograph or piece of art to be used within a framed panel, choose one that does not crowd or touch the panel frame on any side. There should be space remaining around the piece when it is hung; the more equal the space all around, the better. Small panels can be used for small pieces or left empty.

Repeat the Same Object Within a Series of Frames

A formal look can be achieved by repeating the same single object, or type of object, within each framed panel in a series of panels of equal size. For example, an elegant wall vase or bracket supporting florals or greenery can adorn each panel. Or a series of African masks or antique silver trays can accomplish the same formality. In any case, no panel creates a single focal point.

Display China and Other Dining Ware

China plates and platters allow flexibility in grouping and hanging within framed panels. Arrangements can be symmetrical and formal or asymmetrical and casual. Small framed panels create vignettes for smaller pieces, such as a cup and saucer or a small collection of spoons. Keep in mind balance and proportion as in hanging photos and art.

Use Light Fixtures, Shelves or Other Utilitarian Pieces

If additional lighting is needed, picture frame panels provide an ideal place to hang sconces, either singly or in pairs. Simple shelves within framed panels offer places to display collections. Antique clocks or musical instruments are showcased within frames and become interesting topics for dinner conversation.
