Decorate A Bedroom In Mediterranean Style

Carry the colors of the Mediterranean into your bedroom's decor.

It is natural to hope for a warm, homey bedroom. Because of its rich colors and textures, Mediterranean style lends itself well to comfort. A Mediterranean style bedroom can be achieved by introducing some of the rustic elements of the old world.

Instructions

1. Create authentic looking Mediterranean-style walls. Colors of the region include sea blue, terracotta, burnt orange, sunset yellow, olive green and bright red. More than any other factor, Mediterranean style is associated with the rich regional colors. Texturing the walls before or during painting creates an "old world" feel.

2. Add interest through the use of textiles. Wall tapestries, draperies, table runners, comforters and richly textured throw pillows all add depth and visual interest to a room. Textiles make a room feel warm and soften the feel of the hard wood, glass and metal surfaces.

3. Fill the room with heavy furniture. Tall, heavy furniture is a hallmark of Mediterranean decor. Rustic, scarred and well-worn furniture give the room a homey feel. Glass tops and wrought-iron legs are perfect contrasts for the hefty furniture. If your furniture looks too modern, change out the hardware to a more rustic style.

4. Display Mediterranean-style art. Ceramic and earthenware vases and colorful urns on the nightstand and dresser add color and an air of authenticity to the room. Place over-sized vases on the floor, filled with dried grasses or reeds. Hang wrought-iron pieces of art and frame family photos in heavy, ornate frames. Greenery is always appropriate and can be used around windows, over door frames and in vases.
