Decorate A Female Teen'S Bedroom

Decorating a teenage girl's bedroom can be an arduous task. She is at a time in her life when she is developing her own style, and it may not be one that you completely understand. It is important for her to have a space that reflects who she is and her transition into adulthood. Take a deep breath; there are ways that you both can compromise on the décor so that she can have an area she will love and one that you will be happy with as well.

Instructions

1. Talk to your teen about the vision she has for her room. Before you even go to a store, take time to come to any compromises that may be needed and to discuss a budget. If you have an idea of what the final project should look like, the entire process can be less chaotic.

2. Choose an appropriate paint color for her room. The color of the walls is what is going to be the starting point for choosing the rest of the décor in the room. A teen might feel that she is positive of the color she wants; unfortunately, she could change her mind quickly if she realizes it is not how she thought it was going to look. Pick up some small sample cans and paint a little of each color on the wall. Have your teen wait a few days, and then make a final decision. If you want a color that can go well no matter what décor is in the room, consider going with a neutral such as eggshell.

3. Decide what to do with the current furniture. The furniture may be perfect for a child, but as a young adult, it may need to be replaced or updated. To save some money when buying new furniture, consider going to thrift stores to buy some inexpensive pieces. If you would rather update the furniture, give it a new coat of paint or do decoupage.

4. Choose long-lasting linens. Instead of buying linens that are going to fall apart in a year, purchase some that are going to last into her 20s. For example, buy a well-made, plain comforter with no pattern as it can go with her wherever she moves. Both of you should be able to look at the linens and see her using them years down the road even if she has her own apartment.

5. Incorporate adult, basic pieces. As your teenager moves into adulthood, she should have a few pieces that reflect her style but that are timeless and can be used now and later. For example, buy a plain lamp in a basic color that has a clean shape. Even simple dark wood photo frames can fit into this category.

6. Buy the accessories. The accessories can be considered possibility pieces; she may use them in young adulthood and she may not. For example, framed artwork prints, candles and throw pillows are pieces that she can use to add a mix of teenage and adult vibe into the room now, but are inexpensive enough that she can get rid of later if she chooses.
