Paint A Bedroom To Look Bigger

Make a small bedroom look larger with paint.

Not everyone has the money to tear down walls to make a tiny bedroom bigger. Small bedrooms can look dark, cramped and cluttered, making it a less-than-desirable place to lounge or even sleep. Fortunately, it is possible to make a small bedroom look larger using an inexpensive solution: paint. Although painting will never physically make the room bigger, it does assist in giving the illusion of size. According to Harrington College of Design, using a few important painting techniques will give your bedroom depth and the illusion of a bigger area.

Instructions

1. Select a semi- to high-gloss paint for the walls of the room. Glossy paint reflects light cast from windows, giving the illusion of space.

2. Choose a light color in a blue, green or yellow shade. These colors are inherently more soothing to the eye than plain white, which can look jarring as well as dull.

3. Paint one wall in the bedroom a deeper color to create depth. This is known as an "accent wall." This is perfect for people who prefer deep colors like burgundy, chocolate or burnt sienna and have a small bedroom. Painting all of the walls of tiny bedroom in dark colors, however, often makes the room appear smaller.

4. Select a feature of the room, such as a fireplace or bay window, then paint the wall with the feature in a rich jewel-tone or other deep color.

5. Think of beach colors like sand and the light blue of waves and sky, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Beaches are large and open, and the colors will convey that feeling in your bedroom. Paint each wall in a different neutral "beachy" shade. For example, paint the ceiling light blue and the walls in shades ranging from light tan to cream.

6. Apply white paint to the ceiling. This will make the ceiling appear higher, thus making the room look larger.

7. Mask off vertical stripes with tape between three and five inches wide. Choose two colors that are the same tone (for example, beige and cream) and alternate stripe colors. This will make the room look taller.
