Remodel A Bungalow Bathroom

Add a larger window to make a bungalow bathroom seem bigger.

A bathroom in a bungalow home, which may have been built in the 1930s or earlier, typically needs more light and space. If you're fortunate, you can borrow space from another room or a closet to expand the bathroom. Otherwise, you can upgrade lighting, put in a new window or use soft colors to give your bathroom the feeling of more space. Keep special features such as beadboard that give your bathroom character and harmonize with the rest of your home. Add materials and fixtures that will make getting to work in the morning easy and allow you to relax and unwind in the evening.

Instructions

1. Measure the bathroom, and sketch out a floor plan. Keep the toilet in its present location, if possible, to avoid major plumbing changes. Other fixtures are easier to change. Plan for a larger window or a skylight, if possible. Also plan for additional overhead and wall lighting.

2. Rip out walls, flooring and the ceiling, if necessary. Add new plumbing and wiring for recessed lights and wall sconces. Add insulation on the exterior wall and in the ceiling. Replace plastered walls with drywall.

3. Install main fixtures and cabinetry. Build a tiled shower with glass doors. Use subway tiles around the shower for period authenticity, but choose contemporary colors and finishes, such as glass. Put in a clawfoot tub, but make it a fiberglass tub instead of cast-iron. Consider a dresser-style vanity with raised-bowl-style sinks. Don't seat the toilet at this time. This should be done after you've put the floor in.

4. Lay flooring, and finish the space. Install new light fixtures, shelves and wall cabinets. Add hardwood, tile or vinyl flooring. Seat the toilet on top of the new flooring with a wax seal. Paint the room in a color or colors of your choice.
