What Themes Are There For A Teen Girl'S Bedroom

Bright colors and contemporary shapes often appeal to teen girls.

As she transitions out of childhood and reaches her teenage years, the typical teen girl becomes interested in self expression and creativity. Usually this means upgrading her bedroom decor from childhood themes and switching to decor that expresses her new interests, tastes and personality. You can easily find a theme bold enough for teenage girls and stylish enough for her parents.

Color-Based Themes

Matching walls and bedspread creates a simple, effective theme.

Color immediately evokes different emotions, and your teen girl probably holds strong opinions about her favorite color. Building a bedroom theme around a single color is versatile and eye-catching. Paint the walls in her favorite color as the main theme, and repeat the color through pillows, lampshades, small items of bedroom furniture and other accents. If she has an unusual favorite color and you fear she may outgrow it soon, try a softer variation (for instance, lavender instead of vivid purple).

Hobby-Inspired Themes

Your teen probably has hobbies and other interests that play a large role in her identity, so incorporate these hobbies into her room. If she's involved in sports, use a sophisticated version of a sports-themed bedroom with a color scheme based on her favorite team, framed athletic posters and shelves for displaying trophies. For a fashionista, include a full-length mirror and vanity, framed fashion magazine prints and plenty of space to display shoes and outfits.

Location-Inspired Themes

If your teen is learning a new language or dreams of visiting faraway locations, use her favorite country or city as inspiration for bedroom decor. Cosmopolitan destinations, such as Paris, London and New York are often favorites with murals or vinyl wall stickers displaying famous landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty. Evoke a specific country by incorporating the national flag in subtle accents, such as pillows or door-pulls.

Motif-Inspired Themes

A floral theme can be contemporary and stylish.

Many teen girls prefer themes that are still playful but more contemporary and sophisticated than most childhood bedrooms. Build a theme around a simple motif, such as flowers, stars, hearts or angel wings. Or build a theme around a pattern, such as stripes, polka dots or animal print. Instead of overwhelming the room with the motif or pattern, incorporate it through various accents, such as matching the bedspread, lampshade, wall art and storage containers.
