Make Small Accent Pillows For Dining Chairs

Accent pillows add color and comfort to your chairs.

Making accent pillows for your dining chairs adds a decorative touch to your dining room and provides a cushioned back for you and your guests. You can make pillows in any size by choosing pillow forms to fit the dimensions of your dining chairs. Make the covers in an envelope style so that you can remove the covers for washing or change the décor as you wish.

Instructions

1. Cut one piece of fabric for the pillow front that is 1 inch larger than your pillow form on all sides. Cut a second piece for the pillow back that is 1 inch larger along the top and bottom edges and 4 inches wider. So for a 13- by 20-inch lumbar pillow, your dimensions are 14 inches by 21 inches for the pillow front and 14 inches by 24 inches for the pillow back.

2. Cut the fabric for the pillow back in half, creating two pieces of fabric that are 14 inches by 12 inches each.

3. Fold under 1/4 inch along the 14-inch width of each of the back pieces. Press the fold with an iron. Fold under again to create a hem, and pin the fold in place with straight pins. Stitch the hems with a sewing machine.

4. Place one of the back pieces on top of the front piece with right sides together. Match the edges along the side, top and bottom edges. Pin the fabric along the edges.

5. Place the other back piece on top of the front pieces, matching the edges along the opposite side, top and bottom edges. This piece overlaps the first piece by about 3½ inches, creating a flap on the back of the pillow cover.

6. Stitch along all edges of the fabric using a 1/4-inch seam. Trim the corners diagonally to remove excess fabric.

7. Turn the pillow cover to the right side. Use a pencil to push the corners out. Press the pillow cover. Insert the pillow form into the pillow cover.
