Refinish A Bathroom Vanity

Regardless of the materials your bathroom vanity is made of, it is subject to a lot of damage over the years from water, cleaning chemicals and even hair and beauty products. Refinishing a bathroom vanity helps to remove damage spots and make the vanity look brand new. Even if there are no damages to repair, you may wish to refinish a bathroom vanity to update the style or theme of your bathroom.

Instructions

1. Remove all objects from inside and on top of the vanity. You can place the objects on a nearby empty, dry surface, such as the floor or empty bathtub. Wipe all debris from the top of the vanity into a trashcan. Do not allow the debris to fall into the sink of the vanity, as this may lead to a clog.

2. Clean all surfaces of the vanity with cleaning products. This allows you to stop the growth of mold and mildew in damp areas of the vanity, and remove dried on substances like toothpaste. Use various cleaning products and attempt to remove stubborn stains caused by rust or beauty products.

3. Remove vanity drawers and doors using a screwdriver. Remove handles from the front of the drawers and doors, so that the doors and front of the drawers can be refinished without harming the handles. Clean the handles with an appropriate cleaning product for the material the handles are made of.

4. Use paint thinner and the paint scrape to remove paint or stain from the door, drawer front and all painted or stained sides of the vanity. Sandpaper the vanity after stripping off the paint or stain. This will remove bumps and further remove the vanity's previous covering.

5. Wipe the vanity and all parts with a tack cloth or damp cloth to remove dust from the sanding. Use a paintbrush, cloth, sponge or other painting device to repaint or re-stain the vanity. Allow the newly painted vanity to dry.

6. Reassemble the vanity. Install new handles if you cannot fix or thoroughly clean the old handles, or if you simply want to update the handles.
