Design A Bedroom In A Small Space

Sparse furniture opens up a small room.

A small bedroom can be a design challenge, but it does not have to limit your creativity. By using a few simple techniques, you will maximize the space you do have and lift that cramped feeling that a cluttered room gives you. Going vertical is key when trying to maximize floor space. Examine your room for ways you can do this to create a light and pleasant environment you will feel comfortable relaxing in.

Instructions

1. Paint the room a soft color that reflects light. Neutrals create a relaxing environment and provide the illusion of added space. Ceilings should be white to create a sense of space and height.

2. Hang light, flowing fabric curtains 12 to 16 inches above the window frame to add height to the room. Install slimline blinds for added privacy.

3. Reduce the size of your bed and remove the foot board to add valuable floor space. Consider a Murphy bed that folds into the wall so the room can be used for multiple functions. Avoid bold patterns on bedding, which can feel busy and make the room feel smaller.

4. Utilize vertical wall storage for books and accessories. Organize items efficiently and put small items into boxes or baskets to reduce clutter. Hang a flat-screen television on the wall rather than having a large tube set.

5. Utilize hidden storage by keeping extra bed linens, clothes and shoes in flat containers under the bed.

6. Open up the space by using reflective materials such as glass or mirrors. Orient a large mirror to reflect a window to maximize visual impact.
