Unclog Bathroom Sink Pipes

You can unclog your bathroom sink yourself.

If your bathroom sink is clogged, you don't necessarily have to call a plumber. If you know the sink is just clogged because of hair, debris or soap, you can likely fix the clog using a plunger or a plumber's snake--available at hardware stores. Chemical drain clog removers might work on less severe clogs, but for a tough clog you will need to follow specific steps to fully remove the clog and get water flowing through the pipes again.

Instructions

1. Fill the sink with enough water to cover the rubber part of the plunger, then plunge up and down repeatedly. You can create additional plunging pressure if you cover the overflow drain in your sink, if there is one. Use a rag to cover the overflow drain, or have someone else hold it for you while you plunge. If the clog comes loose at this point, stop plunging and turn on the hot water for a few minutes to clear the pipes.

2. Place a bucket under the trap--the curved pipe under your sink--and unscrew the trap using a pipe wrench. You can place a rag over the pipe where you're going to unscrew to prevent scratching the pipe with the wrench. Remove the nuts connecting the pipes. Water will drain into the bucket.

3. Feed the snake cable into the drain or pipe, in whichever direction you believe the clog to be, until you feel resistance. Pull 18 inches of the snake cable out of its casing and tighten the screws. Turn the crank on the casing to push the snake into the pipe or drain. Pull out more cable and continue pushing it into the pipe until it reaches the vertical pipe. This should release the clog. Pull out the snake and clean and recoil it.

4. Put the pipes back together and tighten the nuts with the wrench. Turn on the hot water and let it run for a few minutes to clear the pipes.
