Decorating Ideas For A Nautical Blue Bedroom

Create a nautical-blue bedroom with subtle sea-inspired details

Nautical-inspired bedroom decorating schemes are often a favorite type of design for homeowners who enjoy the ocean. But this motif can be overdone with visual clutter and the use of too many sea-themed icons. It 's possible to create a nautical bedroom decor with hues of blue as an anchor (so to speak) for the design. The addition of a few tastefully placed accents and accessories can create a subtle nautical appearance for a bedroom that both men and women will enjoy.

Color Palette

Incorporate nautical colors into the design. Quintessential nautical-inspired colors usually include blue, white and red. Using the patterns and hues in the selection of bedding as an inspiration, choose a blue shade that is appropriate for the walls in the room. Paint all four walls navy blue in rooms with an abundance of light, or apply blue only to the wall behind the bed in rooms with few windows and lack of natural light. Accent the space with red and white pops of color in subsequent layers of design, such as rugs, bed accessories and curtains.

Wall Accents

Choosing one large focal wall accent adds style to a nautical decor without overwhelming it. Hanging a vintage-looking, framed ocean map on the wall behind a bed can do the job. Mirrors, such as a brass-accented porthole, create a space that feels expansive and reflects light, which is especially important in a darker-hued room. Fill in smaller wall areas with framed ship paintings, boating-knot shadow boxes or decorative signs to amplify the look and feel of the nautical bedroom.

Decorative Lighting

Enhance the entire nautical bedroom decor with specialty lamps. Adding table lamps with details such as boat-rope accents or weathered brass bases to bedside tables adds a subtle nautical touch. Reproduction ship's-lantern votive candle holders create a soft mood and add a seaside element as well. Lastly, incorporating ship-inspired wall sconces in caged varieties on either side of a large dresser is a way to further accent the room without distracting the eye with too much visual clutter.

Nautical Accessories

Accenting the entire sea-inspired decorating scheme adds a crowning touch to the design and creates visual interest at the same time. Using accessories sparingly, display a collection, such as decorative lighthouses, model ships, boat sculptures and nautical clocks. Finish off the design with a luxurious bed throw in tones of red, and a few decorative striped bed pillows.
