Painted Bedroom Vanity Ideas

Update your bedroom vanity with paint.

A bedroom vanity that doesn't match your decor may be functional but it's also an eyesore. Instead of being stuck with an unattractive yet useful piece of furniture, consider giving it an update with a fresh coat of paint. You can match nearly any theme with simple paint techniques. Regardless of which idea you decide to try, clean your vanity thoroughly before you begin painting. Any dirt, grease, lotion or makeup on the vanity may prevent the paint from adhering properly and could ruin the finished appearance of your bedroom vanity.

Antique Bedroom Vanity

Give a bedroom vanity a new look and some character with faux antiquing techniques. One of the ways to achieve this is to paint the vanity one solid color. When the first paint color is dry, apply a second color and then immediately wipe most of the paint off with a clean, lint-free rag. This will make it look like the outer coat of paint was worn away naturally over time. Another method requires the use of crackle medium. You can find this product in the paint aisle of most home improvement stores. The process consists of applying a thick layer of the crackle medium over your base coat of dry paint. When the crackle medium dries, apply a different color paint on top. The top coat of paint will begin to crack and give your bedroom vanity an instant antique look. Whichever process you choose, consider applying a coat of polyurethane over the dry paint to protect your custom-painted furniture.

Metallic Bedroom Vanity

Painting your bedroom vanity with a metallic color can make it look like a completely different piece of furniture with little effort. Look for metallic spray paints to complete this project. You can transform a wood or even plastic vanity by choosing the appropriate type of spray paint. Always read the back of the can to ensure that the product is suitable for use on your vanity's material. Remember that over-spray is an issue when working with spray paint, and if you leave the vanity in your bedroom, you may end up with gold or silver walls as well. Avoid this problem by taking the vanity outside to paint it and return it to your bedroom when the paint is completely dry.

Marble-Top Bedroom Vanity

If you're willing to spend a few days painting your bedroom vanity, you can create an impressive piece of furniture with a faux marble technique. Start out by painting the legs and back of the vanity in the desired color. Creating a marbled look may require a little practice but you don't need artistic skill. You can refer to a piece of actual marble to choose the colors of your vanity top. The basic process consists of applying a base coat of paint, adding marble veins in several different colors, brushing a glaze over the veins, sealing the paint with clear polyurethane and sanding the polyurethane with extra-fine sandpaper until it feels smooth. Time is a factor because you must allow the paint to dry completely after each step of the process. You can use standard latex paints as the polyurethane layer on top will provide the smooth feel of actual marble.
