Dining Room & Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Many dining rooms are decorated in a formal style and are used for special occasions. Formal dining may not suit the lifestyle of some families. They prefer a casual setting that can be used for everyday meals. Kitchens should always feel warm and friendly for family and guests. Choose decorating ideas that fit your family's style.

A chair rail is a good way to blend two colors. Choose a color from the table setting and use that for the walls. Paint the top half of the wall beige and the bottom half can coordinate with the table setting. Wallpaper ceiling borders will blend the two paint colors together. A collection of antique dishes that are used for display is another way to pull colors to be used on the walls. Draw attention to a large area rug under the dining room table with colors from the walls. Fabric seats on chairs can also add more color.

Family portraits are another nice touch to a dining room and can be hung above a credenza. A credenza can be used as a storage area for fancy serving platters. The top is convenient for holding desserts that are not set on the table during the meal.

Storing dishes for special occasions is convenient when there is a china cabinet in the dining room. China cabinets not only make an accessible storage space but also can be used to display special pieces.

A dining room is an excellent place to showcase collections. Some dining rooms have a crystal chandelier hanging above the table. This is a good place to display crystal figurines and crystal stemware.

Little changes stand out and show that you pay attention to details. Colorful or artistic cabinet knobs and pulls will add life to ordinary cupboards. A country look can be achieved with pulls that look like spoons or forks. Stencil art painted on doors will also add country charm to average-looking cupboards.

Framing a favorite recipe from a friend or family member is a tribute to the person and keeps the recipe close at hand. Copy the recipe on paper to complement the décor and attach it inside a simple frame. A child's art work can graduate from the refrigerator door to a colorful picture frame. These pictures can be changed monthly to display the budding artist's latest creations.

Kitchen wall space may be limited because cupboards dominate, but this is a good place for a vibrant color. Paint the walls an exciting color and use a wallpaper border to complete the décor.
