Chic Bedroom Decorating

Develop your own chic decorating style.

A chic bedroom displays a smart and elegant approach to room design. It will showcase the owner's sophisticated style and individuality without looking cluttered. A chic look relies on sleek lines and a subtle contrast of colors. Utilize creative details throughout to keep the room looking well-designed.

Instructions

1. Develop a color scheme. Choose colors that accentuate the furnishings in the room and promote a sophisticated tone. Taupe, beige, off-whites and cream and light grays are sophisticated colors. Use accent colors in bright greens, blues, red, pinks or orange to enhance the more subdued base colors. An accent wall in a brighter shade heightens the contrast and sets a clean, smart tone.

2. Choose curtains or blinds. Colorful curtains without patterns create a chic look, drawing attention to the windows and contrasting with the walls. Or consider Roman blinds--soft fabric blinds that gather into pleats when raised--to bring a sophisticated elegance to the room and allow diffuse light into the room.

3. Choose the room's focal point and add accessories to draw attention to it. For instance, if you have a fireplace in the bedroom, draw attention to the hearth by adding intriguing objects on the mantle. If the fireplace is unused, consider filling the black space with a mirror for an elegant look. If you make the bed the focal point, consider adding more colors to the bed with oversize pillows in patterns or contrasting bright colors.

4. Choose sleek lines for your bedroom furniture. For an especially chic and elegant bed, consider a canopy style with narrow posts. Modernize the look by adding a thin canopy top, like a silky net, for a light and sophisticated look.
