Replace A Bathroom Sink Drain







In time the sink drain in your bathroom will become corroded and leak. Although it may look difficult, once you know replace a bathroom sink drain, you can install a new one in just a few hours. Most hardware stores stock replacement bathroom sink drains with and without pop-up stoppers. The most important key is to remember when installing a new drain is that the beveled washer must point into the sink to maintain a secure fit.


Instructions


1. Place a bucket underneath the bathroom sink pipes to catch any water left in the pipes.


2. Use a pipe wrench to remove slip nut that attaches the sink trap to the sink drain. Remove the slip nut on the other end of the sink trap where it connects with the drain line coming from the wall.


3. Turn the thumb screw counterclockwise that connects the rod assembly from the drain to the stopper lift handle.


4. Use a pipe wrench to unscrew the locking nut that secures the drain to the sink. Remove the nut completely and any washer that may be present. Tap on the sink drain from below the sink with a rubber mallet to break the seal between the putty and the flange.








5. Remove the sink drain pipe from below the sink and lift out the sink drain flange above the sink. Clean any residual putty around the sink drain hole with a plastic putty knife.


6. Roll a ball of plumbers putty in between your hands to form a rope. Wrap the rope of plumbers putty under the flange of the new sink drain flange.


7. Attach the beveled washer and friction gasket to the new drain body with the curved portion of the beveled washer pointed toward the sink.


8. Insert the new drain body into the sink hole from underneath the sink with the washer and friction gasket pointed up. Insert the drain flange into the sink from above and thread it on the drain body.


9. Pull down on the drain body and tighten the locking nut by hand. Once the locking nut is hand tight you can tighten it completely using a pipe wrench.


10. Turn the drain body to the rear so that the pop up linkage will align with the stem linkage. Wrap thread seal tape around the threads of the linkage connection and insert the plunger into the drain opening.


11. Insert the linkage ball into the drain body from the linkage connection and tighten the retaining cap to the drain body. Connect the ball linkage guide to the rod assembly and tighten the thumbscrew by turning it clockwise.


12. Turn the sink trap into position with the bathroom sink drain body and reattach the slip nut. Tighten the slip nuts on both ends of the sink trap evenly.
