Design A Small Master Bedroom

Design a Small Master Bedroom

Small bedrooms pose design and decorating challenges. However, you can integrate architectural elements, color schemes and finishes that give the illusion of volume. Study your bedroom floor plan, and consider a variety of arrangements so you can determine keep spaces feeling open and breezy. The best aspect about decorating small bedrooms is that minimal changes have a dramatic impact on the interior.

Instructions

1. Clear out clutter and bulky objects from your bedroom. Eliminate pieces that serve no purpose in the bedroom, and relegate them to another room. Recycle, sell or donate items that you no longer need so that you can assess how much space your small bedroom has for storage. Clean windows, walls and surfaces.

2. Study your floor plan to determine design possibilities for the small space. Adding a window or widening a current window brightens small interiors. Install a skylight or solar tubes over a dark corner or narrow space to beautify it. If your master bedroom has bulky closet, bathroom or other interior doors, replace them with lighter weight pieces or even tri-fold screens or curtains. The narrow strip of wall beneath sloping walls or dormer ceilings can hold cabinets or built-in shelving.

3. Paint small bedroom surfaces to create the illusion of increased space. A monochromatic room makes an interior feel larger and more streamlined. Cool colors, such as lavender, stone gray, periwinkle, steel blue and green, make walls appear to recede. Use a semi-gloss paint in blue-based white on ceilings and sloping walls to reflect light.

4. Invest in furniture that offers small space solutions, such as a bed with hidden storage or a loft bed with a work space underneath. A tall, narrow bookshelf can serve as a room divider and privacy screen. An ottoman surrounded by floor cushions transforms a corner into an area for reading, exercising or drinking a cup of tea. A pendant light gives the space sculptural detail while providing task lighting. A long, modular cabinet next to the bed serves as a nightstand while holding storage containers for sorting your belongings.

5. Soften surfaces with textiles. Lightweight, flexible fabric brightens a small bedroom without consuming valuable floor space. Float a gauzy canopy over your bed, and hang sheer panels or window scarves in the windows. Modular carpet tile can provide a pop of color and pattern on the floor. Neutral bedding brightens with a scattering of throw pillows in florals, stripes, toile or paisley.
