Replace A Bathroom Vanity Top With Granite

Granite can be cut to order to fit any shape or size of vanity top.

Replacing your current bathroom vanity top with a granite top can be a great way to upgrade your entire bathroom design. Not only do granite tops have a natural variation and beauty known only to natural stone, but the under-mount sink commonly used with granite can help update the room as well. No matter what type of vanity top you currently have in place, removing it is one of the least invasive ways you can get a new look for the space.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water below the sink in the vanity. Use a pipe wrench to disconnect the waste pipe and faucet supplies from the sink and faucet installed on the old top.

2. Prepare to remove the old top from the vanity. Look at the underside of the corners on the top. Remove any screws that are securing the top to the vanity. Cut through any silicone caulk or adhesive holding the vanity to the top, using a utility knife. Run the edge of the knife around the base of the top wherever it makes contact with the vanity or wall to loosen it. Lift the old top off the vanity.

3. Run a cloth over the vanity's top edge to remove any dust or debris. Lift the granite top into place and check its fit on the vanity. The top should overhang the vanity by 1/2 inch on three sides. Remove the top and set it upside-down on a nearby flat surface.

4. Install the faucet on the granite top by pushing the stems of the faucet up through the top and fastening them on the underside with a nut and a wrench. Run a thin bead of epoxy around the underside of the granite next to the sink cutout and place the under-mount sink upside-down on the underside of the granite. Allow the epoxy to dry undisturbed for 10 minutes before moving the granite top.

5. Run a thin bead of Liquid Nails or a silicone caulk adhesive onto the top edges of the vanity. Turn the granite top over and lift it above the vanity. Lower it slowly into place so it compresses the silicone.

6. Hook up the waste pipe to the sink below the top and connect the water-supply tubes to the faucet using the pipe wrench. Turn on the water valves and test the faucet to check for leaks.
