Design A Bedroom With Gray Yellow And Black

A yellow wall set off by gray and black creates a bright bedroom.

Designing a bedroom with gray, yellow and black offers creative combinations of neutral black and gray with the primary color of yellow. Yellow walls and curtains increase the sense of space and light in a room, giving a bright fresh look. Light gray as a dominant color keeps a sense of light and spaciousness while exuding a cool quality. Black as a dominant color creates strong contrasts. Apartment Therapy reports that painting a tiny bedroom's walls black can make them "simply disappear."

Instructions

1. Make a list of the elements you want to include in the bedroom. These can include any existing art, furniture, and accessories such as lamps and plants. List new items you'd like to add to the room, such as framed art, curtains, an area rug, a vase and candles.

2. Measure any major pieces of furniture you're using or planning to use for the bedroom, including the bed, dresser, chest of drawers, chair, bench or storage chest. Write down the height and width of the windows if you need to buy window treatments to go with the new gray, yellow and black color scheme.

3. Arrange the bedroom with existing furniture that goes with your color scheme. Use any wooden and metal items you still like, such as chrome. These pieces are neutral and will work with gray, black and yellow.

4. Gray or black marble fits this color scheme.

Check how much room you have for any furniture you want to add to the room. If you want to add a gray armchair, measure the space where you want to put it. Allow 36 inches of clearance for major walkways in the bedroom, such as from the door to the bed and from the bed to the bathroom.

5. Measure the available space for an area rug to fill from the foot of the bed to within 1 foot of the walls on the end and each side. An area rug in one or more of the colors of gray, yellow and black design brings the room together, especially if you opt not to paint.

6. Gray walls create a neutral bedroom backdrop.

Write out your color scheme, specifying the wall color, trim color -- if applicable -- curtain color, bedding colors and the colors for key furniture and accessories. These can include dark gray walls with black trim, a black comforter, yellow bed skirt, yellow pillow shams, photographs of yellow orchids, potted yellow orchids, a wrought iron candelabra with yellow tapers and yellow curtains on a black wrought iron curtain rod.

7. Shop for the furniture and accessories you need to complete the bedroom's gray, yellow and black color scheme. Find pieces of framed art or a wall grouping featuring one or more of your colors to coordinate with the bedding, curtains and rug. Adding accessories such as vases, a gray or black lamp with a yellow shade, a solid or print dresser scarf, a new cushion for a bed bench and a throw folded across the foot of the bed to add color at little cost.
