Build A Dining Room Corner Nook Bench

A basic bench can be made in a simple and attractive manner.

Corner benches are a great way to turn an unused corner of your dining room into a fully functional and comfortable sitting area. These benches work well as reading nooks or breakfast spots and can be pulled up to a table and used for emergency seating. The basic style of the bench can be used in any size and configuration, including multiple corners if need be. The basic materials of the benches are 2-by-4 boards and wood screws, and only basic tools are required to attach them together.

Instructions

1. Set out two 20-inch 2-by-4 boards, parallel to each other with a large side down on the ground. Position them 13 inches apart. Place two more identical boards on top of them, but perpendicular so they form a 20-inch square frame with overlapping corners. Drill two 2 1/2-inch wood screws into each overlapping corner to complete a leg support. Repeat to create a total of five such leg supports.

2. Build a smaller leg support by following the same procedure but using two 20-inch 2-by-4 boards and two 18 1/2-inch 2-by-4 boards to create a rectangular frame that is 20 inches high but only 18 inches wide.

3. Set out three of the square leg supports about a foot and a half apart, and lay out five 48-inch 2-by-4 boards across them to be the seat boards. Adjust the seat boards so they are evenly spaced on top of the leg supports and front to back on them as well. Slide the leg support on the far right over until the end of the seat boards only cover half of the top of the leg support, leaving the other half open to support the other bench.

4. Drill two holes down through each seat board and into each leg support. Set 2 1/2-inch wood screws in each hole and tighten them securely.

5. Set the rectangular leg support perpendicular to the exposed leg support, with its 20-inch surface at the same height as the other leg supports and its 18 1/2-inch boards extending parallel to the seat boards. Set out the other two square leg supports in front and parallel to the rectangular leg support, about a foot and a half apart.

6. Position five 48-inch 2-by-4 boards on top of the three leg supports so that one of them covers the exposed section of the previous bench's leg support and the 10 seat boards form an L shape. Arrange the seat boards and the leg supports for even spacing, then drill two holes down through each seat board and into each leg support. Attach them in place with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.
