Paint A Dining Room With A Chair Rail

Transform your dining room from boring to beautiful with a fresh coat of paint. Take advantage of the style your chair rail provides, and use it to add new life to the room. Select complementary colors or two shades of your favorite color.

Instructions

1. Cover any flooring or furniture that will remain in the dining room throughout the painting process with drop cloths.

2. Fill any holes or cracks in the wall with joint compound.

3. Lightly sand the walls, depending on their condition, using an electric sander or fine gauge sandpaper. If the walls aren't peppered with holes or bumps, you may not need to sand too much.

4. Brush way the dust created by the sanding with a clean rag.

5. Mask off the ceiling, baseboards, window frames, and chair rail with painters tape.

6. Choose which color of paint you will be using above the chair rail and which you'll be using below. If using two tones of the same or a similar color, the darker color usually goes on the bottom half of the room.

7. Apply the first coat of paint both above and below the chair rail. Allow it to dry for about half an hour and apply a second coat of paint. Allow 24 hours of drying time once the second coat has been applied.

8. Carefully remove all of the painters tape.
