French Decor In The Master Bedroom

Create an elegant French-inspired master bedroom.

Master bedrooms are often one of the most relaxing and luxurious rooms in the home. Choosing a French design for the master bedroom space is a fairly easy way to create a room that is elegant as well as calming. French decor is usually full of rich fabrics, ornate specialty lighting and romantic-looking accessories. Adding a color scheme that that includes cooler hues further enhances the calming look and feel of the space.

Color Palette

Use a cool color palette. French master bedroom spaces are usually calm and restful rooms. As a primary layer of design, choose an overall color scheme that includes hues such as gray, green, blue or lavender. Paint the walls a soft, light tone and keep bedding in medium and darker shades, to enhance the room's calming properties.

Opulent Fabrics

Add elegant bed linens. Using the bed as a focal point for the decor, dress it in sheets, comforter, bed skirt and shams that reflect the opulence of France. Choose bedding in shimmering fabrics with elaborate trims and details. Include toile fabric, known for its pictorial images of the French countryside, in some of the pieces.

French-Inspired Lighting

Incorporate French-inspired lighting. French bedroom decor is often opulent, so accentuate that by adding specialty fixtures that highlight the elegance of the room. Tiffany-style reproduction table lamps are quintessentially French and add color and design to the space. Wall sconces in tulip-shaped designs create subtle lighting near a fireplace or dressing area. As a crowning touch, hang a large crystal chandelier above the bed to amplify the focal point of the space while adding an element of French flair.

Elegant Accessories

There is no better way to accentuate the master bedroom's French decor than to add French-inspired accessories. Place a grouping of three vintage silver picture frames on a bedside table for an elegant touch. Hanging a lavender wreath on the wall above the bed or a beveled, ornate mirror above a dresser highlights the entire French decorating scheme. Place a decorative birdcage in a corner to complete the French master bedroom decor in style.
