Dining Room Buffet Hutch Decorating Ideas

Use your hutch or buffet to enhance your dining room decor.

Decorate your dining room buffet and hutch to complement the style, color scheme and decor in your dining room. Your buffet and hutch can serve as a storage area to keep extra items put away--but close at hand--and a display area to show off your most treasured items. Either way, it should accentuate your style and bring you joy to look at it.

Dishes

Dishes are an obvious choice for a hutch, as the original purpose of a hutch was to display one's finest china. If your dining room is decorated in a Victorian or formal style, display your china set. Display an array of dishes if you have an eclectic collection of different sizes, colors or textures. If you have mismatched pieces from various sources, or collect hand-painted dishes, these would work for a country or casual dining room. The dishes do not have to match, unless you want them to. Instead, focus on creating a balanced display that works in harmony with the rest of your decor.

Art

Art is another subjective display choice. If your dining room serves as the center of your family's activities, consider displaying items that come from the members of your household. Display tiles or plates with your children's handprints or artwork. Display their latest photos in picture frames that they painted. Show off the mugs and vases that your little ones sculpted or decorated. These items will delight your heart each time you sit down to share a meal, and make the kids feel special to see their handiwork in such a prominent way. Display sculpted statues, hand-blown glass vases or other contemporary art in a contemporary dining room. The type of art that you display in the hutch should reflect the style and colors found elsewhere in the room.

Collectibles

Your dining room buffet and hutch is one of the most logical places to display your collection. If you collect various clocks, arrange them in the hutch in a pleasing way. Pottery, bottles, glass, vases, dishes, baskets, books, crystal figurines, bear knickknacks, seashells, cultural artifacts, model ships inside of bottles or any other collection that you have can decorate the hutch as long as it fits in with the dining room decor. If you have a variety of different collections, rotate the items every couple of months to keep your display fresh and interesting, and give each of your collections time to shine.

Display Options

Paint, stain, distress or stencil your buffet and hutch to fit in with the room and collection. For example, if you have a collection of dishes, tea cups, paintings and vases with rose patterns, stencil a small rose pattern around the edges of the hutch to fit in. Distress your hutch to fit in with a worn, country cottage or farmhouse look. Add spotlights to shine on your most treasured pieces.

Arrangement

Use each opening to display a piece that is similar in size and shape to create a balanced and pleasing look. Avoid stuffing the hutch with too many small collectibles or they will look cluttered and get lost in a sea of "stuff." Instead, arrange a couple of smaller pieces in front of larger pieces to keep your eyes moving around to take in each piece. If all of your pieces can stand on their own, fill each display area with one piece.
