Decorate A Country Master Bedroom

Use colors from nature for your country bedroom.

Think rustic and simple, using the colors of nature, including red, blue, white and green, to get the country look. Reminisce in bygone days of the rural countryside by bringing back traditional items from a quieter time. Use natural materials like weathered wood, rough brick and massive wooden beams. Complete the room with practical, unpretentious accessories like baskets, bowls, candles and dried flowers. Basking in a country bedroom slows down the pace after a busy day.

Instructions

1. Start with the floors, ceilings and walls, using what is already there as a framework. Leave beams unfinished and bricks rough and natural. Finish wooden floors naturally or carpet them in floral patterns. Freshen up plaster walls with a new coat of paint. Add country charm with stenciled or wallpapered walls.

2. Select a basic color palette. Take your cues from nature. Country decorating embraces colors like barn red, sky blue, daffodil yellow and grass green. Bring many shades of white into the design including eggshell, bone, ivory and bright white. "Country Living" magazine suggests adding printed and patterned fabrics such as toile, florals, gingham and stripes.

3. Mix rugged, sturdy furniture with timeworn antiques and family heirlooms. Don't be afraid to use reproductions, crafts and homemade pieces. Stow away a country chair in a cozy corner. "Country Home Decorating" recommends choosing Adirondack chairs, Windsor chairs or a well-loved rocking chair. Bring the stenciling from the walls right onto the furniture to add a bit of whimsy. Cover the bed in a handmade quilt topped with starched white pillow cases. Add a dust ruffle in floral or gingham fabric. Bring in the other colors with fluffy throw pillows. Drape a hand-knitted or crocheted throw across the end of the bed.

4. Accessorize with traditional essentials to complete your country bedroom look. Use cottons and wools for window coverings and small rugs. Cover nightstands with vintage tablecloths or create your own using bandannas or embroidered handkerchiefs. Add fresh or dried wildflower arrangements to the space. Place them in practical containers using vintage wicker or wire baskets and ceramic bowls. Add some candle holders, a fancy antique brush and mirror set, and crystal perfume bottles.
