Decorate A Hawaiian Bedroom

Of all the rooms in your home, your bedroom should feature a decor that suits your unique style and needs. Hawaiian-themed bedrooms remain a perennial favorite because they create the sense of a relaxing, natural retreat in the bedroom. You can do a quick Hawaiian update in the bedroom by switching your textiles and investing in some thematic wall art or spend more time and money for a full Hawaiian bedroom makeover.

Instructions

1. Consider the variety of Hawaii decor themes. You can go Polynesian with bright tropical prints and an ocean-inspired palette. Add some kitschy style to your bedroom with a tiki bar-inspired look. A beach party and surfing theme recalls Elvis in the movie Blue Hawaii.

2. Establish the theme by painting or finishing the walls. You can do a simple tropical backdrop by using ocean blue, bottle green, mango orange, lemon yellow or brilliant red on an accent wall. If you prefer to paint all four walls, go with cheerful yellow or periwinkle blue and add accents of brighter shades. For a tiki look, you can install wood paneling or hang raffia mats or cover a wall in a packaged mural featuring a bamboo forest. For surfing style, a wall mural of waves breaking adds an exciting backdrop.

3. Transform your bed or bedding to fit the Hawaiian decor theme. Keep the look sleeker and more sophisticated with a platform-style bed frame in a medium or dark stain and leaf green or ocean blue bedding or go bolder and brighter with prints of tropical flowers or jungle vines. Add to the jungle theme by suspending a mosquito net or a canvas canopy over and around your bed.

4. Complement the Hawaiian bedroom decor with other furnishings and accessories. Use natural materials and items from nature to evoke Hawaii's natural wonders. Rustic wooden furniture with bold lines works well with this look, as does an Asian-influenced design of unadorned, simple wooden frames that have low profiles. Bring beach-inspired furniture indoors by including a wicker table and chairs at the window or a metal garden cart covered in blossoming plants in a dark corner. Line a floating shelf, windowsill or tabletop with shells, coral, sea glass, sand dollars and stones to evoke the ocean.

5. Illuminate different parts of your Hawaiian bedroom with accent lighting. A pair of wall sconces with flower-shaped fixtures might frame a painting or mural. Use torch-style floor lamps to evoke tiki torches. Table lamps can feature stained glass shades with ocean colors. Tea lights give your room the warm glow of an open fire at a beach party.
