Chinese Themed Bedroom Ideas

A Chinese-themed bedroom can transport the occupant into another world. Themed bedrooms can make the home feel more like a luxury resort or bed and breakfast. There are some key ingredients to turning a bedroom into a Chinese haven, including bright colors, bold print fabrics and dark lacquered furniture.

Select Chinese Color Choices

Before adding any furniture into the Chinese-themed room it is important to select a background color as a starting point. Many Chinese decorating colors are bright and bold ranging from deep reds to soft greens. Choose a color that is suitable for the space. Darker colors will make the room look smaller, and lighter colors will open up the space. Remember when selecting the paint color that many pieces of Chinese furniture are black lacquered.

Chinese Inspired Fabric

Curtains and bedding need to co-ordinate with the color or colors chosen for the wall. Solid colors are perfect for bed spreads and curtains in the Chinese-themed bedroom. While many Chinese-themed fabrics consist of intricate detail work and rich textural fabric, the overuse of these materials will give the room a gaudy look. So, use these fabrics in unexpected ways. Add small decorative pillows, or make the fabric into a luxurious tapestry hung on the wall by a single piece of bamboo, instead of using it as a large element in the room. These fabric details could even be used for a small throw or incorporated into the room by the use of an area rug.

Chinese Inspired Furniture

A key element in a Chinese-themed bedroom is lacquered furniture. This furniture is usually made with dark woods such as rosewood, walnut or mahogany. Pieces should be chosen that are hand-painted and carved. Details in the furniture should consist of mother of pearl or gold leaf.

One of the most popular pieces of furniture found in Chinese decorating is the two door storage cabinet. This storage cabinet can be easily utilized in the bedroom, as a wardrobe or television stand.

Wooden trunks are also a common element in a Chinese themed room. These trunks can range in size from really small to extra large. Just make sure that the pieces follow the guidelines for traditional Chinese furniture, and fits well into the size of the bedroom. A good location to use the trunk is at the end of the bed for storage.

Small side tables can also be used as night stands. Look for tables with beautiful country scenes, or natural elements hand painted on the side.

Chinese Accessories

When choosing accessories for the Chinese themed room select things with a natural element. Bamboo-framed mirrors are a perfect edition to any bedroom, as well as Chinese paper lanterns detailed with black calligraphy or landscape patterns.

Other decorative elements include, cork sculptures, Chinese fans, statues made from ivory and jade, or cloisonné vases.
