Decorating Inspiration What Are Some Ideas For A Misses' Bedroom

When it comes time to redecorate a young woman's room, carefully consider a new theme.

There comes a time in every woman's life when she outgrows the cartoon animals, pink princess decor or toy horses that dominate her bedroom. When it's time for a change, it's important to take into consideration her changing tastes and decide on something that's going to be timeless and ageless, and comfortable well into adulthood.

Victorian Rose

Ornate lighting fixtures can add a finishing touch to a Victorian bedroom.

A Victorian Rose theme can give any bedroom an elegant, classic look that hearkens back to another time. Instead of painting the walls, hang floral rose wallpaper. For a truly authentic Victorian look, wallpaper the top half of the wall and cover the bottom half with mahogany paneling. Mahogany was the most popular wood (or wood color) of the Victorian era, so add a new bed frame, dressers, nightstands, storage chests and a low bench or two in that same wood tone. Most padded Victorian furniture was stuffed to be comfortable, so this is the perfect style of room to add a comfortable reading chair and footstool. For the floors, use a dark floral area rug over wood floors.

To accessorize the room, line the walls with framed sepia photographs or collections of pressed, dried flowers. Collections of any sort will add to the Victorian feel; try glass figures, teacups and saucers, small statuettes or ceramic animals.

French Country

A French country bedroom should be light and comfortable.

A French country style will give a bedroom a light, airy, welcoming feel. Colors that are popular for this decor style include white, light green, light blue, soft pinks and pale yellows. Painted walls with wide stripes of alternating shades of the same color are common in French design, and those same colors should be scattered throughout the rest of the room. Comforters, armchairs, throw pillows and upholstered benches should all contain some combination of these colors.

For the window dressings, use long, flowing curtains made of lace or a similarly light, transparent material. These window dressings, along with the bedskirts, should reach the floor.

For lighting, use delicate, finely crafted end table lamps and chandeliers. Porcelain and glass accessories such as vases, candlesticks and statuettes will also fit into the decor. To make the room look larger than it is, consider a mirrored headboard for the bed.

Retro 1960s

A retro 1960s room is perfect for a woman wanting to hold on to fun and freedom.

For the free-spirited young woman, consider a 1960s theme. A bedroom of '60s decor is fun-loving and casual, and can speak volumes about the woman it belongs to.

Bright colors are a must; for painting the walls, use more than one complementary color and decorate with painted swirls, circles and flowers. Continue the theme of bright colors, but select a handful so it's not too overwhelming. (The colors don't have to be fluoroscent; try a combination of chocolate brown, bright pink and bright blue for a muted version of the look.) Add comforters and curtains with polka dot patterns, a few leather beanbag chairs, tie-dye patterned clothes on the nightstands and lava lamps at the side of the bed.

Peace signs are easy to paint on the walls or on furniture, as are yin yang signs and daisy flowers. Shag throw rugs and a few incense burners can help bring the theme together.
