What Items Go In A Dining Room Hutch

A dining room hutch fills both storage and display needs.

When you're designing your dining room, a table and chairs are a must, but a hutch is also a useful addition to the room. Designed for storage and serving food, hutches are available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, including those with open shelving, closed shelves, cabinets or drawers in various sizes. Depending on the style of hutch you own, you can store and display a wide variety of items.

China

Whether you got a complete set of china as a wedding gift or are the proud owner of your grandmother's dishes, a dining room hutch is the ideal place to store it. Depending on the style of your hutch, you can stack the plates and bowls on the shelves (Use a coffee filter between plates to prevent damage.), or use plate racks to stand the plate vertically so the entire plate design is visible through the glass doors.

Collections

A dining room hutch is an ideal place to display a collection. For example, if you collect vintage milk glass vases or dishes, display them on the hutch shelves. Store your collection of mismatched antique teacups and saucers or another collection of pretty dishes or accessories. Avoid cluttering the shelves though; you want your pretty or unusual items to stand out, not get lost in a jumble of patterns and miscellaneous items.

Cooking and Serving Pieces

Most dining room hutches have a base with cupboards or drawers. This hidden area is a good place to store items that you do not use very often, such as serving dishes. Storing items like your crystal punch bowl and glasses or extra barware in the hutch provides easy access when you need them for entertaining while keeping them from cluttering the areas you access every day. If you have a small kitchen with limited storage space, a dining room hutch can provide extra storage for pans that you do not use very often, such as your large roasting pan.

Decor

Storing your table decor in your dining room hutch makes it easy to pull together an attractive display for a special dinner. Use the drawers or cabinets in the hutch to keep your tablecloths, placemats, napkins, napkin rings and other items, such as candlesticks, candelabras or centerpiece containers, neat and easily accessible. Keep large serving spoons and other seldom-used utensils in the hutch as well; keeping them handy will prevent multiple trips back to the kitchen during the meal.

Office and Craft Supplies

If you use your dining room for another purpose, such as a home office or craft area, designate a section of your hutch to store materials and supplies. Keep your supplies in portable containers that you can easily stow in the hutch when dinner is served.
